Ryan entered the program in fall 2018 and studies high medieval Europe. His research attempts to understand how religious institutions maintained distinct identities and values while navigating complicated social, political, and legal landscapes. Through the use of archival and documentary evidence, he hopes to use traditional forms of administrative history to explore themes of modern relevance, especially social mobility, state power, and perceptions of dignity.
