Next Thursday (6:00pm – 7:00pm.) as part of ArtsThursdays Pablo Gómez (historian of medicine, UW Madison) will be in conversation with Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez (artist) about the themes in their work and the parallels with the CHSI exhibit Measuring Difference. Pablo's terrific forthcoming book, Bloody Arithmetic, looks at the insurance agents of the slave trade, in particular how these agents counted human bodies and, through measurements, redefined the "worth" of a human. Nancy's commissioned art piece pushes one to think of surveillance of black and brown bodies in the eighteenth century and today.  It will be a treat to have an historian and an artist speak about how they approach these themes in their work.
