His research spans the early-modern period, with a focus on seventeenth-century painting in Italy and Spain. His Master’s thesis, “Measuring Martyrdom: Ribera’s San Gennaro Escaping from the Furnace Unharmed,” engages the 1647 altarpiece to illuminate Ribera’s aesthetic imagination and the complexity of his subject: the lived experience of martyrdom. Recurrent areas of interest include the historical traversals and re-significations of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque subjects; the materiality of devotion and visionary experience; the theory and practice of physiognomy; painted text; the homoerotic image; and the affective forces of art in relation to language.
