Currently the 8th Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and a United Nations committee official, Sir Hilary Beckles also chairs the Caricom Reparations Commission, which seeks reparations for the descendants of slavery’s victims in the Caribbean. An historian trained at the University of Hull in England, Dr. Beckles has published 20 monographs, 10 edited volumes, and five plays. A few titles of his monographs show the range of his interests: Britain’s Black Debt: Reparations for Caribbean Slavery and Native Genocide (2012); A History of Barbados: From Amerindian Settlement to Nation State (revised second edition 2008); Liberties Lost: Slave Systems in the Caribbean (with Verene Shepherd, 2004); The Development of West Indies Cricket (1999) Centering Woman: Gender Discourses in Caribbean Slave Society (1999); and Afro-Caribbean Women and Resistance to Slavery in Barbados: An Auto-critique of Black Rebellion (1988).
