SUMMARY:Workshop/Symposium: Sugar and the Early Modern Atlantic World
DESCRIPTION:<!--break-->Abstract: <span style="color:black;">“One of the world’s most coveted commodities, sugar is an agent of both delight and oppression. Examine sugar within the wider historical context of trade, commerce, and slavery that organized the Atlantic world in the 17th and 18th centuries. Uncover the relationship between art, sugar, and slavery, and how sugar production and trade relates to the MFA’s Dutch and American still lifes, landscapes, and genre paintings and decorative arts.”</span><p>	<span style="color:black;">Speakers include:<br><strong>Vincent Brown,</strong> professor of History and of African and African American Studies, Harvard University<br><strong>Dennis Carr,</strong> Carolyn and Peter Lynch Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture<br><strong>Michiel van Groesen,</strong> professor of Maritime History, Leiden University<br><strong>Antien Knaap,</strong> curatorial research fellow, Art of Europe</span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;">Performance by <strong>Jean Appolon Expressions</strong></span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;"> </span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;">For further details and ticketing click here: </span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;"><a data-auth="NotApplicable" href="https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.mfa.org_event_lecture_sugar-2Dand-2Dthe-2Dearly-2Dmodern-2Datlantic-2Dworld-3Fevent-3D46826&amp;d=DwMFAg&amp;c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&amp;r=d-51fevjuWJ7WzZY0y0BouTOvLCsE6Nbeq9XtutWF7k&amp;m=inM48Yz56szJPbLW-suY5ikcNMaghfbTN-eaqJDUoqY&amp;s=L75Et31ORgtmqTuQvmE05kVUo161Vv3WLw_p9mbpAFY&amp;e=" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span style="color:blue;">https://www.mfa.org/event/lecture/sugar-and-the-early-modern-atlantic-world?event=46826</span></a></span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;"> </span></p><p>	<span style="color:black;">Students can <strong>reserve free</strong> <strong>tickets</strong> by emailing: <a data-auth="NotApplicable" href="mailto:collegeprograms@mfa.org" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span style="color:blue;">collegeprograms@mfa.org</span></a></span><span style="color:#1F497D;">. </span><span style="color:black;">Their Harvard ID will give them free access to the museum.</span></p><p>	 </p>
